It’s no fun having to hand wash dirty clothes or making the trip to the laundromat, when you should be marvelling at the great outdoors on your camping trip. Thus, if you’re looking to rent or buy a camping vehicle, look for an RV with washer and dryer. These units can wash and dry your clothes in no time, in addition to being ergonomic, compact and lightweight, so they won’t swallow up valuable space. They are specifically engineered for  the RV setting, thus they are water-saving and energy efficient, and can withstand vibrations and shocks on the road.

Typically, most recreational vehicles on the market do not include one of these marvelous readily installed washer and dryer combo but only the hookups in the private bedroom’s closet. Why make things more complicated for yourself when there are indeed RV with washer and dryer for sale that have it all: solid construction, excellent amenities and functions and pleasing aesthetics.

We have compiled the different models of RV with washer and dryer and their features, including motorhome Class A, Class C, fifth wheel, travel trailer and truck camper models. So you can have your pick depending on your camping needs and budget, and never have to worry about running out of fresh clothes again. At the end, you will find other valuable information on RV washer/dryer combos.

Washer Dryer Combo For RV: The Basics

A washer dryer combo is essentially a two-in-one combination of a washing machine and a dryer, and these units wash and dry clothes in one setting. So they are ergonomic, lightweight and take up at most half the amount of space compared to the typical set you have at home, that is a separate washing machine and a separate dryer. This is crucial when you’re living in the limited space of an average RV. RV washer and dryer combos are portable, so it’s easy to fit them in your rig as you see fit or to store them away when camping season ends.

They are not only space-saving but also water-saving and energy-efficient. This is vital, especially if you tend to boondock and thus don’t have access to the campground’s service hookups. Easy installation, no plumbing required, these washer/dryer units make a fuss-free addition that will elevate your camping experience.

You won’t have to worry about your RV washer dryer combo dying young on the road due to all the physical beatings, since the manufacturers already had this in mind. These RV units typically are built with durable construction and heavy duty components to resist vibrations and impact in the RV setting. In addition to being affordable, you can expect them to last at least 10 years with proper maintenance.

Despite being smaller and cheaper than your typical household washing machine and dryer, these combo units wash and dry clothes effectively. When you’re camping, your clothes will be spoilt from traces of nature after your trekking and excursions. Washing by hand thus would be time consuming while not effective at all, and driving to the nearest town to go to the laundromat eats up precious time. Therefore, consider renting or buying one of the below models of RV with washer and dryer for your next hassle-free trip.

Washer Dryer Combo For RV: User Guide

How does a washer dryer combo work?

Like the model you have at home, just put in your clothes, add detergent and select the washing/drying cycle. Note that regardless of the type or make and model of washer dryer combo you have or what detergent you use, always only use about a tablespoon of detergent for each load to prevent suds overflowing.

The second important note is these units have smaller loading capacity than either a household washing machine or dryer, thus do not try to overload them. It is a source of stress and will impede the unit’s efficiency, or will leave behind detergent residue on your clothes.

Once the washing cycle is finished, transfer your clothes from the washing tub to the spin-dry tub and drain the dirty water. A washer/dryer for RV doesn’t require plumbing, so you only need to drain into the kitchen sinks, shower or gray water tank.

Once drying is done, just like what you would do with a residential dryer as proper maintenance, always clean the lint from the vent, usually in front of the machine and at the bottom. Lint buildup will impede the drying process.

How long is the average washing and drying cycle?

The length of the washing cycle and drying cycle depend on the unit’s loading capacity, as well as the wash or dry programs that you select. A drying cycle will typically take 40 minutes or more (sometimes more than 1 hour). In general, these RV combos usually take twice as long to dry the same load compared to what you have at home, since the spin-dry tub in these units is considerably smaller than the washing tub.

How long do washer dryer combos last?

With proper use and maintenance, most manufacturers claim an average serviceable lifespan of 10 years, and some rare ones claim to last up to 20 years. In comparison, a residential washing machine typically lasts 12 to 15 years, while a dryer can last between 12 and 18 years.

How do I power an RV washer dryer combo?

Depending on the make and model, a washer and dryer for RV require 300-500 watts of power per hour and draw in 12 amps of current. So you will need a 120-volt service.

Benefits of an RV washer dryer combo

  • Water and energy efficient: Designed for the camping setting, washer and dryer combos for RV are engineered to consume less water and energy. These units consume between 300 and 500 watts per hour, while a residential washing machine consumes 250-300 watts and a dryer consumes 2,500-3,000 watts.
  • Affordable: The average washer dryer combos for RVs are available at a reasonable price range, thus they get raving reviews even from the budget-conscious campers as a worthwhile long-term investment to perfect their camping life. In addition, if you travel year round, owning a durable unit will be cheaper than going to a laundromat in the long run.
  • Compact and lightweight: Instead of a set of a washing machine and a dryer that swallow up space in a small rig, a two-in-one unit only takes up half the amount of space at most. They are lightweight as well so it’s easy to move it around.
  • Durable: These units are built to effectively withstand the shocks and vibrations on the road, so as long as you give them proper maintenance, they will be with you for many years

Types Of RV Washer Dryers

Vented Washer And Dryer

As the name suggests, this type of RV washer and dryer removes excess moisture and carbon monoxide by an exterior vent. Vented units are typically compact and lightweight. They are more affordable than their portable counterparts, and also consume less water and propane than the non-vented type. Being resource-efficient is very important when you’re camping, regardless of whether you have access to a campground’s service hookups or prefer to boondock.

Meanwhile, vented units washes and dries your clothes more quickly and effectively then ventless washer and dryers. All in all, they offer excellent performance and are more earth-friendly. The only downside is you need to drill a hole in the wall or allocate a vent to release excess moisture outside to prevent moisture buildup inside your RV, a setup which is not always conveniently done.

Ventless Washer And Dryer

Also compact and lightweight, the advantage of a ventless combo is the condensing chamber designed to get rid of excess humidity without the need for an external vent. The excess water will be collected through a pipe drain. This type of washer dryer is ideal for those who don’t want the hassle of installing a vent and drilling a hole in the wall to release water.

On the other hand, the major downside with this category is it takes considerably longer than a vented model to dry your clothes and tend to use more water for the washing cycle. It dries clothes by heating the air inside the drum, which means these units will consume a bit more propane as well.

Furthermore, ventless units are typically a bit more expensive than the vented version. In short, if your priority is to have your clothes to dry effectively and quickly, probably because you’re traveling in a large group and have a lot of laundry to do, a vented unit would be the most logical option.

Stackable Washer and Dryer

Compared to the two types above, a stackable washer and dryer is larger and allows a larger washing and drying load. They essentially are the more compact and lighter version of your residential unit.

A larger capacity means convenience and less time doing laundry, but is more suitable for bigger rigs. Depending on the manufacturer and the specific model, these stackable units can handle loads of at least 13 pounds. Despite their capacity, they are designed to save power.

Portable Washer and Dryer

A portable washer and dryer are mini-sized and can fit in the tightest corners of small rigs. In operation, they often don’t even require electricity, but only a faucet and a drain. This type requires manual operation, and they typically are not very durable. That said, they might be the perfect solution for small rigs that cannot fit or power any other kind of washer dryer for RV, and for campers who only travel on short trips at a time or those who want to graduate from hand washing dirty clothes, especially when the weather doesn’t permit hanging clothes out to dry.

However, these mini units can only handle a small washing and drying load. While the upper limit for washing is around 15 pounds, below 10 pounds is the norm. However, a smaller load can be done in only under 20 minutes. These units are ventless and come with multiple drying options, or use sensors to detect how damp your clothes are.
