As most activities that occur on recreational vehicles involve a certain amount of lighting, keeping the interior illuminated is one of the priorities in RVing.

The Basics About RV Skylights

What is an RV skylight?

To put it plainly, an RV skylight is a structure with light-transmitting properties that make up a part of the ceiling of recreational vehicles. Standard skylights for RV consist of two parts: the inner liner and the outer cover. The inner liner lets natural light come into the interior while the outer cover protects the inner liner from elements.

Benefits of having an RV skylight?

Illumination: With skylights on the roof, you would be able to illuminate the inside of your RV without having to depend entirely on lighting fixtures.

Electricity: As skylights flood the interior with light, you don’t need to keep your lighting fixtures on all day. Thus, the electricity consumption of your rig in the outdoors is going to drop and the battery bank may last a bit longer between recharges.

Money: When electricity consumption reduces, the utility bills decrease as well which means you could save a couple of bucks. That is a big plus if you move around frequently and need to cut down expenses whenever it’s possible.

View: On recreational vehicles that incorporate skylights, not only light would reach the inside but people onboard should also have no trouble seeing the outside. Want to lie down and take a look at the sky from time to time? In that case, it’s strongly recommended that you install a skylight for RV immediately.

Exit: Regardless of the precautions that you take, accidents could still occur as you travel. By adding a RV skylight to your ride now, you should have one more exit available for use during emergencies.

Types of RV skylight

Once it comes to skylights for recreational vehicles, RV owners have a lot of choices. Still, on the market nowadays, just three types of skylights exist: fixed, ventilated and tubular.

  • Fixed Skylights: As the name indicates, fixed skylights don’t move after installation wraps up. As they shut out cold air and minimize heat loss, models of the type prove popular among RVing enthusiasts that regularly pass through cold regions. However, fixed skylights often heat up the interior and make the atmosphere stuffy during summertime.
  • Ventilated Skylights: Manufactured with a particular range of motion, ventilated skylights simultaneously keep the inside of recreational vehicles illuminated and facilitate the circulation of air. Needless to say, RVers that like to keep the air in the interior moving throughout the day hold models of the type in high esteem. On the downside, ventilated skylights could compromise the insulation of rigs when people operate them.
  • Tubular Skylights: Capable of providing illumination without significantly influencing the interior temperature, tubular skylights give a good account of themselves in an assortment of conditions. In addition to that, models of the type come at reasonable prices so they match the wallet of typical RVers. As for the shortcomings, tubular skylights keep people from getting a view of the outside.

This was a much thicker and stronger cover than the factory had installed. Installation was straight forward using self-leveling sealant. I used Dicor brand with good results. The hardest part is getting the old sealant off the rubber roof membrane without tearing it but wit some care, patience and diligence, it can be done.

Thick and sturdy polycarbonate, yet was flexible enough to follow the slight curvature of the RV roof. I installed over a closed-cell foam rubber gasket to ensure a leak-proof, air-tight seal (first picture), then applied self-leveling lap sealant around perimeter and a dollop on top of each screw head. It is also an excellently clear skylight (see third picture looking up through skylight from inside the RV to see trees and sky). This last picture also shows off the interior skylight trim available from the same manufacturer (ICON).

I replaced my old outter shower skylight with this one and luckily two of the screw holes lined up to position the skylight exactly where it was needed. Then I was able to drill the rest of the new holes to fasten the skylight to the roof. I used self leveling EPDM rubber to fill the old screw holes and Butyl rubber tape on the edge of the skylight to seal the skylight to the roof then used EPDM self levelling sealant to seal the outter edge and screw heads. This worked great and the skylight looks and works great.

Steps To RV Skylight Replacement

You find the original skylight of your RV less than ideal and want to replace it as fast as possible? If that is indeed the case then you have to follow the steps down below

  • Step 1: Wipe clean the roof of your rig. Focus on areas surrounding the skylight opening.
  • Step 2: Use a putty knife to remove the sealant of the skylight opening so as to expose the screws underneath. Be careful or you may damage the roof by mistake.
  • Step 3: Unscrew the screws, lift the skylight dome from the roof and place it somewhere else. Next, proceed to get rid of the leftover skylight sealant using your putty knife. Afterward, fill the screw holes with sealant compatible with the skylight you plan to install.
  • Step 4: Put the new skylight onto the opening and use self-tapping screws to fasten it. Tighten the screws until they seem to flex the material of the skylight dome.
  • Step 5: Apply sealants around the edge of the skylight and on top of the screws. Wait for the sealant to dry and inspect everything again. You likely have to apply extra sealant here and there to create a complete barrier.

FAQs about RV Skylights

How do you insulate an RV skylight?

Regarding the insulating of skylights on recreational vehicles, RVers have a wide range of options. With its high R-value, foam is the first choice of those that wish to keep the interior warm as the outside temperature drops low. You could either spray foam along the frame of skylights or install rigid foam boards. Besides foam, thermal blinds also provide significant boosts to the insulation of usual recreational vehicles.

How do I darken my RV shower skylight?

In the case that your skylight lets in too much light, you may want to apply a layer of paint on top of it. To avoid compromising the skylights, it’s strongly recommended that you use plastic-compatible paints. You don’t want to darken your skylight for good? Then you should think about covering the skylight with vent covers, window curtains and so on.

How do you install a skylight in an RV?

Different RV skylights have different characteristics so the setup process changes from model to model. Aside from that, you have to consider the state of your ride prior to installing skylights on it as well. Depending on the situation, installation of skylight may take anywhere from a couple of hours to several days to complete. Of course, you always have the option of hiring others and let them handle the setup procedures in your stead.

What are RV skylights made of?

Modern skylights for recreational vehicles incorporate metal, plastic, vinyl, etc. Each material possesses distinct characteristics and that makes a number of skylights more suitable to certain rigs than the rest.

How to measure RV skylight?
