Lithium Battery Basics

What is an RV lithium battery?

Lithium batteries pack lithium anode which provides high energy density and keeps cost per cycle low. Because of that, lithium batteries hold considerable power, deliver charge consistently and reduce operational expenses. In addition, unlike typical lithium batteries, lithium batteries for recreational vehicles tend to be lithium-ion models that could be repeatedly recharged by the users. Owing to the fairly low self-discharge rate, lithium batteries take a long time to deplete outside of use too.

How does it work?

Operations of lithium batteries essentially center on movements of lithium ions between cathode and anode. In general, when lithium batteries discharge electric current, lithium ions move from anode to cathode. On the other hand, lithium ions move from cathode to anode when lithium batteries receive power from any external sources.

Benefits of a lithium battery for RV?

Efficiency: Compared to their contemporaries, lithium batteries boast fantastic efficiency so it’s simple to keep wastage to the minimum. Also, it’s possible to charge lithium batteries all the way to 100% so RVers could maximize the charging process.

Lifespan: Assuming that people don’t push them to the extreme, lithium batteries would easily last through thousands of cycles. That means if you opt to use lithium batteries for your battery bank,  there is no need to worry about replacement batteries for several years.

Maintenance: Since lithium batteries happen to possess sealed construction, they require little care in use. With lithium batteries, enthusiasts of RVing don’t have to do things like refilling the distilled water on the road.

Tolerance: Lithium batteries handle temperature deviations superbly which allows them to maintain stable operation as ambient temperature increases and decreases. Naturally, lithium batteries earn a shower of praise from RVers that travel around the year.

Recharge: To reach max capacity, usual batteries for recreational vehicles need to be charged from ten hours to twenty hours. In the case of lithium batteries, RVers only have to wait between two and four hours for the batteries to get fully charged on average.

Best Lithium Batteries For RV

I am very pleased with this battery. I have had it for 6 months and it is great. Very reliable, zero maintenance. I have it hooked up to a 300w solar system on my camper van/RV and it charges very fast. I even hooked it up to a 450/900 watt space heater and ran it for 1.5hr on the lower 450 watt setting via a 600w (1200w surge) inverter. It raised the temperate of the RV interior from 55F to 67F in 1 hour (outside temp was 52F with @ 50% humidity in the evening). This was just a test I ran to see what it was capable of. While it did discharge the battery, it performed flawlessly during that time and helped me to learn about how the battery reacts to large loads. The next day I checked on the battery @ noon and it was at full charge from the morning sun. The battery also performed perfectly on a 3k mile, 1 week road trip. It powered the inverter, which fed to 6 LED ceiling lights, a water pump, USB outlets keeping two cell phones, two laptops, one SLR camera, one Dometic fridge running 24/7 without any drop in temperature. Food was always cold. Cold beer in the middle of the desert anytime you wanted. I plan on adding to my solar bank soon with another Battle Born battery and a more powerful inverter so I can run a 1200w water heater and improve the space heater’s performance (only as backup in case of extreme cold). I have not contacted customer support yet for any reason but based on other reviews I am confident that area is just as good as the battery itself. I highly recommend this product.

I’m loving my new Battle Born 12V. I did ALOT of research before taking the plunge, since the initial investment is big. Battle Born has a few videos on YouTube that were helpful and I was greatly impressed with their customer service when I called about the adaptability of my RV converter with their battery. Just gave them my converter model number and they had all the information. They are made in the USA and have a 3 year warranty. I bought one battery to replace my 2 lead acid batteries! Take the leap toward lithium Ion! You won’t regret it. Won’t be long before lead acid is obsolete.

For price, EP12100 of ExpertPower cost more than standard batteries for recreational vehicles but its values justify its price tag. In the case that you wish to own quality lithium batteries and have a big budget, you should add the  ExpertPower battery to our shortlist.

I’ve tested the capacity and came up at 650W-hr at 0.5C discharge rate, so was very happy about that. I use this battery to run about 100W worth of appliances (lights and an air purifier) through a 300W inverter (separate purchase) when PGE cuts power in CA and I get 6 to 7 hours of power out of it. I love that this is lithium-based and can be entirely discharged without much effect on its capacity. Great deal.

Critical RV Lithium Battery Considerations

CAPACITY Appliances on your rig need a constant supply of power to run so the amount of charge that your batteries could hold requires special attention. To deduce the ideal capacity for your batteries, it’s strongly recommended that you take into account aspects of your rig and your travel style. If you regularly spend time in places with shore power and the electricity consumption rate of your RV is normal, standard batteries should be adequate. On the other hand, if you happen to own a power-hungry rig and like exploring, prioritize high-capacity batteries.

DURABILITY As you move between locations, your rig constantly experiences a lot of vibrations which is why you must think about durability while shopping for batteries. The last thing you want to buy is a set of fragile batteries that fail shortly after purchase and spread inner contents throughout your vehicle. Overall, to see whether particular models may last in use, it’s suggested that you take a close look at the materials. In the case that you notice signs that suggest a potentially compromised construction, move on to other batteries.

HANDLING Manipulating individual batteries is easy but when you have to manage battery banks with multiple batteries, it’s best to choose models with great handling. Usually, by assessing the weight and size of market batteries, you would get a good idea of their handling characteristics. For typical trips on RV, light and compact models tend to be the most popular. With such batteries onboard, you should have no trouble looking after the battery bank of your rig and enjoying yourself.

EASE OF USE – It’s common knowledge that regulation of power on recreational vehicles is a tedious duty. Because of that, to pick up the best lithium battery for RV and avoid unnecessary stresses, you need to give ease of use some thoughts. You could gather relevant details about issues such as wiring, storage requirements, methods of charging and so on in the owner’s manual of models. Additionally, it’s wise to read a few customer reviews and see how models you prefer perform on the road.

PRICE – Compared to other batteries, lithium batteries for motorhomes indeed appear to be costly but you don’t have to empty your wallet to grab some. Search the market a bit and you would come across quality models with reasonable prices. That being said, before making up your mind, you should consider putting together a list of desired specifications and features.
