What Is A RV Washer Dryer Combo?

RV washer dryer combo

What is it?

In layman’s terms, a washer dryer combo is essentially a combination of a washing machine and a clothes dryer that let clothes to be washed and dried in one setting. Compared to separate sets of washing machines and clothes dryers, washer dryer combo for RV are ergonomic and take less space so they prove to be versatile and well-suited for recreational vehicles with very limited space.

RV washer dryer combos are designed to be more compact and lightweight than regular household models, thus they are portable. This allows you to move the unit around in your rig to facilitate changing floor plans or to store it away when camping season ends.

In addition, RV washer dryer combos typically come with highly durable construction and heavy duty components to resist shocks and vibrations while your RV is rolling. The best RV washer dryer combo units can even provide reliable service for the full-time RVers, who are constantly on the road, for a decade or more to come.

Designed to cater for the RV life in every aspect, most models are engineered to be not only space-saving but also water-saving and energy-efficient, which are all vital, especially if you tend to camp off the beaten path, far away from campgrounds.

How does an RV washer dryer combo work?

All in all, washer dryer combos work like washing machines. Simply put in your clothes, add water and detergent then select the washing cycle. Some models have designated features to help you control water and detergent levels.

Each load requires only about a tablespoon of detergent, regardless of the type of washer dryer you have or the kind of detergent you use. Avoid using more as it might cause suds to overflow.

And only wash the amount of clothes your unit can hold. Overloading is a stress on the unit, and will make the washing process ineffective. You might find detergent residue still left on your clothes after.

Once the cycle concludes, you could transfer your clothes from the washing tub to the spin-dry tub to dry them. Note that the time the unit will take for washing and drying will depend on the machine’s loading capacity, as well as your chosen wash/dry programs.

Then drain the dirty water. Typical washer dryer combos don’t require plumbing and it’s a breeze to drain laundry water into the sinks or the shower or gray water tank.

As for the dryer, after drying is done, always remember to clean the lint from the vent as proper maintenance. You can usually find it in front of a machine, specifically at the bottom. Lint buildup can render the drying process less effective, just like with dryers found in homes.

Benefits of an RV washer dryer combo

  • Speed up the laundry process: By keeping an RV washer dryer combo in your rig, the length of the laundry process would be reduced substantially. Because of that, you could dedicate more of your time and energy to other issues.
  • Save space: Thanks to the compact construction, washer dryer combos allow enthusiasts of RVing to conserve space. Instead of getting a set of a washing machine and a clothes dryer that swallow up available space, you should get a washer dryer combo.
  • Affordable: Being economical appliances, washer dryer combos usually don’t cost a lot to run so they receive many compliments from RVers that have tight wallets. Furthermore, the average washer dryer combos for recreational vehicles come at reasonable prices as well.
  • Water and energy efficient: On top of being relatively affordable, an RV washer dryer combo typically is built to be water and energy efficient, thus you won’t need to stress out over monthly bills. In addition, if you are a full-time camper or travel often, owning a solid unit that will last a long time will save you a lot of money compared to going to a laundromat.
  • Durable: Engineered to effectively withstand beatings on the road, you can expect a high quality RV washer dryer combo will provide you with good service for decades to come, given proper maintenance.

Different Types Of RV Washer Dryers

A wide range of RV washer dryers combos hit the market every year but they can be divided into three broad categories.

Portable Washer and Dryer for RV

Compact and light, and in some cases, mini-sized, portable washer dryer combos fit well in the tightest of spaces inside rigs that have humble profiles. Thanks to this compactness, you can easily take it into, out of and around inside your rig as you’d see fit.

As for the setup, a portable washer and dryer for RV only requires a faucet and a drain to run and certain machines don’t even require electricity. These units allow you to do laundry anywhere that there is access to an electrical outlet, a sink, and a drain. They are perfect RV washers and dryers for those who don’t have anywhere else to do their laundry.

However, such mini size means a smaller wash and dry loading capacities. The smallest load for a unit in this category is 8 pounds while the upper limit is around 18 pounds. That said, this category might have the quickest washing time, with loads can be done in under 20 minutes

As for the dryer, most of these units are ventless and come with multiple heat and drying cycle options. Some models come with sensors that keep track of how damp your clothes are, and apply heat as needed.

Do note that most models in this category require manual operation, and they typically are not as high quality and durable as the other types, so they are more suited for RVs that cannot fit or power any other kind of washer dryer. They might be a good addition for the spontaneous campers who only go on short trips, who wish to graduate from hand-washing dirty clothes, especially when the weather is not ideal for hanging clothes out to dry.

Pros:

  • Compact and lightweight body
  • Easy storage
  • Require little, if any, electricity
  • Flexible and versatile: do your laundry anywhere
  • Loads are done quickly, especially the washer
  • Water efficient
  • Affordable

Cons:

  • Manual operation
  • Mediocre durability: lower quality than other types of washers and dryers
  • Reliability is less than ideal

RV Stackable Washer and Dryer

If you can afford more space, then you can get a larger washing and drying load with an RV stackable washer and dryer, which works pretty much like the ones in most homes, but they are lighter and smaller.

Possessing marvelous capacity, RV stackable washer and dryer excels at processing big loads of clothing. These stackable machines can handle loads of about 13 pounds, depending on the manufacturer.

As a result, RVers that need to take care of pileup laundry from time to time while traveling ought to grab models of the type. Designed to save power, stackable washer dryer combos help reduce the utility bill too.

Pros:

  • Dependable
  • Outstanding capacity
  • Rapid operation

Cons:

  • Kind of bulky
  • Some models use water excessively

RV Washer Dryer Combo

By using one drum to wash and dry clothes, washer and dryer combos keep the size down which conserve space. Also, models of the type boast lightweight construction so it’s a breeze to move them from spot to spot.

Pros:

  • Economical
  • Splendid handling
  • Superb adaptability

Cons:

  • Limited capacity
  • Complicated setups

In addition, models can be either vented or ventless:

Vented Washer And Dryer

As the name suggests, vented RV washer dryer combo uses an exterior vent to remove excess moisture and carbon monoxide. That means you need to drill a hole in the wall or allocate a vent to release excess moisture outside to avoid your rig getting humid.

Hence, the downside is vented units are not suited for RVs where such a setup is not conveniently done. Otherwise, this type is typically compact and lightweight, but is more budget-friendly than the portable category.

Pros:

  • Affordable price
  • Generous capacity
  • Dry clothes fast

Cons:

  • Require ventilation setup
  • Costly to operate over time

Ventless Washer And Dryer

Ventless washer and dryer are also affordable, compact and lightweight. The advantage of ventless models is they have a condensing chamber to take care of excess moisture, so you don’t need any external vent or drill any holes to get rid of humidity. This type of RV washer dryer combo requires the collection of excess water through a pipe drain.

On the other hand, this category typically is more expensive than the vented type and comes with long drying time. That said, always buy vented units that are vented if you want your clothes to dry effectively and quickly.

Pros:

  • Ventilation is nonessential
  • Low operating expense
  • Undemanding installation

Cons:

  • Quite expensive
  • The drying time is long

We full time in an RV and have for over 9 years. Always with the trip to laundromat. We debated upgrading rig just for the washer/dryer option… My Handy Man that he is said we could put one in our travel trailer with minimal effort/impact. Searched around various models and decided on this one. The install was simple enough by ourselves — that being said my husband is VERY CAPABLE!

Small enough to fit in the door, quite that we can hear the TV still.

We did get the floor brackets to secure it in place from shift in and the 90 degree vent piece… So far all seems good. Yes. The cycles are longer then a top load one washer… All front loaders take longer. Yes. The drying times are longer. The machine is vented but it just takes longer. IT’S CONVENIENT! AND I DON’T HAVE TO GO TO THE LAUNDROMAT EVERY WEEK!

Read the manual and follow the directions….

Perfect for RV travel !!!

Just got it and love it! We travel full time in a small camper. I hate the hassle and exspense of laundromats. I’ve washed all of the laundry that we have accumulated for the week without stepping foot in a laundromat! So much better than going to a laundromat. It takes a bit of practice to figure out this washer since it is different than “regular” washers. But once you get the hang of it, you’ll love it. I was spending an average of $80 per month on laundromat washing for 2 people. Plus the cost for gas to drive from campground to town each week to do laundry. So this washer will pay for itself in less than two months.

I’ve lived in the RV life for the past 3 years and have mostly used coin-operated laundromats. I purchased this little machine about a week ago and I’ve already done all of my laundry today in it so far. Very easy machine to use. It washes clothes fairly quickly and the spin dryer is super fast and gets most of the water out with very little hanging dry time. It washes queen sheet set no problem, 6 – 7 shirts, couple pair of geans at a time. The water inlet hoses they provide are pretty much useless. I used a half inch PVC coupler with short nipple and it slides right down and on the machines fitting no problem. Perfect size for my RV as it fits in seethe bottom of the shower for travel and non use out of storage. Doesn’t weigh very much so it can easily be moved around. I do wish the electrical cord was a few feet longer.

RV Washer Dryer Combo Buying Guide

So you have no clue what to look for in an RV washer dryers combo? Then it’s best that you memorize the criteria below.

Loading Capacity

To put it plainly, the capacity of a washer dryer combo dictates the load of clothes that it’s able to handle in one go. Therefore, to get the best  RV washer dryer combo for your vehicle, it’s essential that you take the size of your laundry into account. If you don’t have a lot of clothes waiting to be washed then you could settle for typical models. On the other hand, if your pileup laundry resembles a mountain, you need to prioritize high-capacity washer dryer combos.

Control Layout

After embracing RVing, you likely have to address an assortment of stressful issues so the last thing you need is to struggle around complicated appliances. As a result, prior to picking up a certain washer dryer, you should take a close look at its control. Doing laundry would be a walk in the park if you have a washer dryer that packs user-friendly control. Beside assessing washer dryer combos on your own, it’s suggested that you read some RV washer dryer reviews too to reach an objective conclusion

Design And Features

You will come across front-loading and top-loading units, just like with household models. Front-loading models are more expensive, but they are  faster and more convenient, especially if you need to place the washer dryer under a kitchen sink or table.

As for features, the best RV washer dryer combo models should have various settings and controls to let you select the type of wash depending on how dirty or delicate your garments are. Some have designated settings for heavily soiled garments and delicate clothes. Others have quick wash for lightly soiled clothes.

When it comes to drying, most models have different intervals. It would typically take at least 30 minutes to dry a load, but of course this would depend on the machine’s capacity.

Noise Level

It’s definitely tough to enjoy outdoor wonders next to loud machines so you must give noise level some thoughts before committing to a purchase. All washer dryer combos for RV on the market emit sounds in use but it’s noteworthy that a few models have relatively subtle operation.

Since an RV washer dryer combo has few moving parts, the noise and vibrations are minimal. The usual noise range of RV washer dryers is within 55 to 70 decibels. Still, being inside the limited space of an RV means noises getting more irritating, so it’s your best bet to get a unit with built-in anti-vibration technology, which minimizes noise and vibrations.

By putting a silent washer dryer combo into your rig, you could go through your laundry in a quiet manner. That is a big plus if you travel alongside others and wish to minimize disturbance.

Consumption Rate

The average washer dryer combo for RV need power and water to run so to keep the utility bills under control, you should pay attention to the consumption rate. All in all, regardless of capability, it’s unwise to grab a washer dryer that consumes power and water excessively.

There are units that can control water and detergent levels to help you save on resources. Some models are Energy Star certified, which is a proof that they are engineered to effectively save water and electricity.

Size And Dimensions

When considering which is the best RV washer dryer combo for your rig, you will have to choose between size and loading capacity. The more compact a unit is, the smaller the washing and drying capacity.

The most lightweight model in the market weighs only about 24 pounds, which also means small wash and dry loading capacities. There are RV stackable washer and dryer units with sizably larger loading capacity for RVs with more space. Otherwise, the market offers quite a few models that offer a good balance between size and load, so there is something for every camper; you just need to look around.

Note that the drying loading is typically smaller, if not half, of the wash capacity. This is because the tub needs more space to let air dry your clothes.

Another important note is that just like a regular household washing machine or dryer. you overload the tub, the machine will become inefficient. Therefore, always follow the recommended loading capacities.

Drum material

The drum is an important component of an RV washer dryer combo. When looking for the best RV washer dryer combo, you should look for one that is made of durable components.

So what is the drum? The inner drum is where the clothes are loaded, which spins around and is perforated with holes to allow the water in and out. The outer tub contains the inner drum and the water, stopping it from leaking into the rest of the machine and supports the inner drum.

Common drum materials include stainless steel, porcelain and even plastic. The safest bet is a stainless steel drum, which can deal with both cold and hot washing, which now has become the most common drum material.

Price

While price is usually linked to value, you don’t need to spend all of your money to get a premium grade washer dryer combo unless you have particular demands. The market nowadays contains a wide range of solid models that come at reasonable prices. So you should consider choosing a washer dryer that matches your wallet and saves some bucks for more pressing matters. That being said, it’s strongly recommended that you avoid dirt-cheap models as they tend to have subpar quality.

1. Vented Vs. Ventless washer and dryer: What are the differences?

Vented Washer Dryer

That drying process releases exhausts that consist of evaporated moistures. By setting up a duct, the exhausts coming out of vented washer dryer combos could be expelled from the room. Vented washer dryer combos work well in usual cases but as they rely on air to dry clothes, RVers must think it through before deciding.

  • Affordable price
  • Generous capacity
  • Dry clothes fast

Cons:

  • Require ventilation setup
  • Costly to operate over time

Condenser models draw in and heat up air like vented washer dryer combos but they collect evaporated moistures in trays/pans so ventilation is unneeded.
