The Basics About RV Stereo

What is an RV stereo?

Essentially, an RV stereo is a sound system that is designed from the ground up for use inside recreational vehicles. Like residential stereos, stereos for RV consists of three basic components: receiver, amplifiers and speakers.

Receiver: Carrying inputs for audio sources and controls of the system, the receiver is practically the heart of a stereo. Modern receivers for RV stereos regularly include intuitive touchscreen displays so people could monitor the operations of stereos and apply changes in times of need.  In addition to that, some units come with Bluetooth integration which allows them to pair with devices via wireless connections.

Amplifier: As it is, the signal coming from audio sources is not exactly powerful and that is why an amplifier is going to be necessary. By boosting the strength of the signal, the amplifier increases the sound quality of audio that the speaker lets out.

Speaker: Responsible for broadcasting audio, the speaker is what brings sounds to the ears of RVers and determines their enjoyment. Most RV stereo systems of today could connect to a number of speakers at the same time with relative ease.

How does an RV stereo system work?

The operation principle of a camper stereo is simple: People hook up the receiver of the stereo with audio sources. After that, the stereo amplifier would boost the signal that originates from the audio sources. Lastly, the speaker receives the signal boosted by the amplifier and proceeds to produce sound.

Benefits of having a camper stereo

Entertainment: With the best RV stereo around, you could play music, listen to podcasts and so on at any time. Thus, you don’t have to worry about getting bored out of your mind as you head toward your destination.

Information: Quite a few stereos for recreational vehicles possess the ability to scant and lock on to signals from the surrounding AM/FM radio stations. That means it’s possible for you to listen to the news via your stereo and stay up-to-date.

Charging: To connect to the audio sources on electronics, the receiver of stereos for campers tends to have USB ports. Using USB ports of the receiver, you would be able to recharge devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and others like them in a pinch.

Types Of Stereos For RV

The market consists of various models but a standard RV stereo usually belongs to one of three types: Hi-Fi, Mid-Fi and Lo-Fi.

  • Hi-Fi Stereos: Dependable and reliable, Hi-Fi stereos should deliver the best sound quality that RVing enthusiasts could expect. Constructed using high-quality components, models of the type guarantee pure and clear audios in a multitude of environments.
  • Mid-Fi Stereos: Capable of providing audios with a decent quality of sound, Mid-Fi stereo would give a good account of themselves in use. Additionally, models of the type reach the market at reasonable prices so they meet an assortment of shopping budgets.
  • Lo-Fi Stereos: Though the sound quality of their audios is not exactly impressive by all accounts, Lo-Fi stereos remain solid choices for casual listening. Aside from that, as models of the type often feature fantastic affordability, they prove popular among cash-strapped RVers.

This review is based on my initial use and impressions and I will update the review if I find any negative aspects to this product. Like many other RV owners, mine came with a Genesis GT-2.0, which in my opinion is really a terrible product. I was never able to get the GT 2.0 to read a DVD and the video output was composite, not HDMI. So, I finally gave up on the GT-2.0 and found the iRV34 as a replacement. It is advertised as a direct replacement and that is absolutely the case. I literally took it out of the box, pulled all the wires from the old GT-2.0 and plugged them into the iRV34 and turned it on for an installation time of way less than 5 minutes. It worked immediately using the existing composite cables. I then used an HDMI cable to hook up to one of the two ports on the irV34 to the HDMI port on the television and immediately had a working unit so I discarded the composite cables. The unit has two output and two input HDMI ports on the back and an HDMI input port on the face of the unit so you can hook up players into any of them. I didn’t have enough time to try everything on the unit but everything worked. Bluetooth with my phone, DVD player, and radio all worked fine but I didn’t have an SD card or USB drive to try them or to have the television sound route through the iRV34 to the RV speakers. Based on what I have seen so far, I readily endorse this product. The Amazon price is about a third less than I would have paid at the RV online dealer where I found other reviews which gave me the confidence to buy this unit.

Bluetooth connection is simple and quick every time, good sound and I like that I can hook my TV directly to if you surround sound in the trailer.

This is a fantastic upgrade for my travel trailer. The old am/fm/cd had no inputs, no frills, and was quite boring. I decided to upgrade and install this unit. I have two TVs in the trailer and no longer need an HDMI splitter. This feeds both simultaneously and provides the flexibility of having the audio come through the trailers built-in speakers or the TV itself. The bluetooth feature works great while camping for music and the extra inputs provide the flexibility for movies from blu-ray, computer, etc. I highly recommend this, it has been a huge success in my trailer.

Reaching the market at a budget price, the stereo from iRV could easily squeeze into the spending plan of RVers. It’s worth pointing out that this stereo comes with everything so the users don’t have to get hardware.

I have a 2005 Coach House RV that originally came with a similar product with a VCR in it. When that original one went bad about 3 years ago, I did not find this or a similar product that fit the shelf it set on. So, I got a more upright style and installed it behind the TV. Not ideal but I made it work. When the surface on the new one turned into a black sticky mess, that got on my hands whenever I touched it, I ripped it out and went on a hunt for something else.

I found this. It fit the hole perfectly from a size perspective. However, the original one was a shelf system and this one requires mounting, so I made some mounting brackets. The wire color on this follows industry standards, so removing the old connectors and installing the connectors for this was not a problem. The only caution is for power you MUST connect both the power and AUX power for it to work (it is 12 volt power only). It has good sound, the radio, DVD player etc all work well….

How To Choose The Right RV Stereo

RVers have plenty of opinions about what could be called the best RV stereo but to make a wise investment, you must remember these criteria.

 DIMENSIONS

Different rigs possess different layouts which is why you need to give dimensions some thoughts while shopping for RV stereos. The last thing you want to do is to spend money on a model that your recreational vehicle cannot accommodate. Prior to making up your mind, it’s strongly recommended that you think about where you plan to set up the stereo and its size. By doing so, you should be able to remove unsuitable models from your shortlist and save a bit of time.

INTEGRITY

Like with any electronics, you have to avoid treating the stereo of your RV roughly in the course of operation. That being said, since RVing involves a lot of shocks and bumps as people move between camping locations, integrity proves to be an important consideration. To see whether a model would last over time, it’s imperative that you take a close look at its design, material and so on. In the case that you come across signs that indicate potential compromises, move on to other stereos on your list.

COMPATIBITY

To ensure that your stereo is capable of playing sounds from audio sources you choose, it’s widely advised that you keep compatibility in mind. If you prefer to play your favorite songs from DVDs on the road, a RV DVD stereo combo is going to be your best bet. If you wish to pair your stereo with your phone and stream music on it then you must stick with models that incorporate Bluetooth functionality. Take your audio sources into account and then decide accordingly.

CONTROLS

As you assess models on the market, remember that you pick up a stereo for entertainment, not to get headaches. Therefore, you have to focus on the controls of stereos before committing to a purchase. With a confusing control interface, even a model that happens to pack top-of-the-line performance would be of little value to its users. Usually, you could learn about the controls of a stereo by reading its owner’s manual but to be thorough, you should check out reviews.

PRICE

$100 – $200: Basic and practical, stereos in the range perform well despite the lack of advanced features. Furthermore, with straightforward installation and maintenance, models that cost between $100 and $200 earn a shower of praises from no-nonsense RVers.

$200 – $300: Designed to play audios with fair sound quality but don’t cost a fortune, stereos in the range have an easy time meeting most requirements. Unable to spend big bucks on stereos but still want to get something of quality? Then it’s best that you look for RV stereos with price tags from $200 to $300.

Over $300: Boasting the latest audio technologies, stereos in the range have the best sounds altogether. Naturally, RV owners that care about the stereo sound lean toward models with costs exceeding $300.

By investing heavily in applications of innovations, BOSS could put together solid stereos that work like a charm for years. Unsurprisingly, those that travel frequently and have few opportunities to replace stereos often hold models of BOSS in high esteem.

Pyle

With a user-oriented approach, Pyle as well as its stereos receive numerous compliments from RVing enthusiasts that prioritize convenience. Models from Pyle last a long time in use too so after people pick them up, it should be a while before they require replacement.

FAQs About RV Stereos

1. What needs to be done to keep stereos in top shape?

Well, today’s stereos for recreational vehicles regularly feature self-contained construction so they don’t need much regarding maintenance. To keep your stereo in good condition, all you have to do is to clean it from time to time.

2. Can I use a residential stereo for RVs?

Constructed for static households, residential stereos lack the strength to deal with vibrations in RVing. That means if you decide to set up a stereo for residential use on your vehicle, it won’t be long before it breaks apart.

3. How much power would stereo for RV consume?

The power consumption of stereos is low so keeping them running for an extended period of time is a breeze. Still, it’s worth pointing out that stereos consume more power as the volume increases.

  1. I installed iRV stereo over the weekend. It only took about an hour or so, and that included modifying the mounting hole in the cabinet. It comes with both RCA and/or HDMI connections on the back. Bluetooth also works fine. I have tried all the functions and all works well.
