travel trailer toilets

Dimensions

Needless to say, space is a luxury in the average recreational vehicle so to get a suitable RV toilet, you must pay attention to dimensions. If you grab a model that proves to be too big, you could experience an assortment of troubles as you bring it into your rig.

That is why it’s essential to think about the available space inside your RV while putting together a shortlist. Avoid committing to a purchase until you know for certain that you have the space for the toilet you choose.

Durability

Many RVing enthusiasts tend to presume that toilets of recreational vehicles don’t face a lot of hardships in use, therefore, durability is inconsequential. That being said, you should remember that your vehicle is going to be exposed to shocks as well as vibrations as you move between campsites.

In the case that you select a flimsy toilet, it would likely fall apart soon which forces you to spend more money on a replacement. So it’s best that you go after rugged models and save yourself a headache.

Ease Of Use

Well, you surely wish to take care of your business in comfort so it’s widely advised that you give ease of use some thoughts. For instance, before making up your mind about what to buy, you need to take a look at the size and shape of the bowl.

The last thing you want to pick up is a toilet with an awkward bowl that stops you from getting into a stable sitting posture. In addition, height is also regarded as a key consideration since that dictates how you sit down and stand up.

Cleaning

So as to maintain sanitation and address stains, toilets of recreational vehicles have to be cleaned from time to time. All in all, cleaning toilets is definitely a less than pleasant job so it’s a good idea to prioritize models designed to facilitate cleaning.

Besides assessing the toilets on your own, you should read reviews of other RVers to get to know the cleaning process and associated issues too. That would help you find the best RV toilet on the market for your rig.

Price

Generally speaking, unless you happen to have particular requirements, you don’t have to spend big bucks to get an expensive premium-grade camper toilet. Being an RVer, you have various bills to pay so it’s unwise to empty your wallet for a toilet.

Assuming that you search around, you could come across quality models that have reasonable prices. Nonetheless, as price is still linked to performance, it’s suggested that you steer clear of dirt-cheap RV toilets.

Types Of Toilet For RVing

While the number of models continues to increase, you would only run into six types of RV toilets: macerating, vacuum, gravity, portable, cassette and composting

rv camping toilet

Macerating Toilets

Possessing motor-powered blades, macerating toilets slice wastes into tiny particles then proceed to send them to the black tank. Hence, models of the type undoubtedly excel at preventing clogging.

Vacuum Toilets

Like macerating toilets, vacuum toilets break down wastes and forward them to the black tank but they use vacuum pumps instead of motor-powered blades. Moreover, since models of the type could be set up in whatever spot that RVers like, they have superb adaptability.

Gravity Toilets

Operate in the same manner as residential toilets, gravity toilets take advantage of gravity so as to pull down wastes. Models of the types have robust designs so they work well in many camping settings.

Portable Toilets

Constructed using lightweight materials, portable toilets allow RVers to relocate them pretty much at will. Models of the types often integrate removable waste holding tanks that people may empty in just a matter of seconds. After the contents have been disposed of, the tanks could be reattached to the toilets. In locations that have relatively few dump stations, portable toilets should be outstanding personal restrooms.

Cassette Toilets

Basic and practical, cassette toilets tend to be unmatched once it comes to ease of use and they also have removable tanks that hold wastes. However, models of the type would be permanently fixed to the vehicles and RVers have to empty the tanks frequently.

Composting Toilets

Being self-contained toilets, composting toilets don’t need water to run so they let RVers conserve water. In use, models of the type separate liquid from solid wastes then convert the latter into humus which could be directly deposited into the soil. As a result, composting toilets receive a shower of praise from those that seek an efficient and environmentally friendly way to deal with human wastes.

Reputable Brands Of RV Toilets

Generally speaking, it’s necessary to limit your options to specific brands of RV toilets. So if you find a quality model that meets all of your demands then feel free grab it without having to worry about its origin. Still, in the case that you like to stay on the safe side, you should get your RV toilet from one of the following brands.

It’s noteworthy that many models of Reliance require disposable bags that you have to purchase from the company separately.

FAQs About RV Toilets

Do I need to pick up RV toilet papers?

Since they disintegrate rapidly compared to traditional toilet papers, RV toilet papers would help prevent clogging in the sewage system. That being said, classic papers also prove adequate in the usual cases so it’s all about personal liking here.

How should I tackle a clogged RV toilet?

Clogged toilets tend to be considered as a nightmare to RVers but you could resolve the situation on your own. Once toilets get clogged, the main suspect is toilet paper so the ideal solution is to open the valve and pour in some hot water. The hot water should break down whatever’s causing the clogs and allow the toilets to return to normal operation. Besides hot water, you could use septic-rated chemical solutions to address the clogs too.

Is it wise to use a residential toilet as a substitute for an RV toilet?

Residential toilets could certainly be used in various recreational vehicles. However, it’s ill-advised to use them as substitutes for purpose-design RV toilets. Engineered for static applications, residential toilets would be unable to take on the shocks as well as vibrations of RVing. In addition to that, the average residential toilets costume a whole lot more water than their RV counterparts in use. As a result, it’s strongly recommended that you refrain from substituting an RV toilet with a residential toilet.

What needs to be done to eliminate odors?

All toilets release some unwanted smells into the surroundings but you could keep them in check by implementing particular measures. Normally, intense odors indicate leaks which is why it’s suggested that you take a close look at the toilet and the sewage tank periodically. Moreover, you should thoroughly sanitize the toilet and the sewage tank to remove clinging wastes.

  1. Thetford toilet was the perfect exact replacement for the original toilet in my daughter’s RV. It came with everything needed for the installation: a new flange seal, nuts & bolts, trim caps, and absolutely no modification was needed. Just add tools and about 10 minutes for installation time and you’re done. It was a direct retrofit, with the added benefit of a higher seat. The sprayer is an optional attachment, but we’ve found we don’t need it because of the innovative flush mechanism and water path.
