RV Macerator Pump Basics

What is an RV macerator pump?

A macerator pump for RV is essentially a pump made to crush wastes in the waste tanks of recreational vehicles. If you put such a pump on your rig, it’s possible to dump waste into sewer connections instead of searching for dedicated dumping stations.

How does it work?

As wastes pass through the macerator pump, practically everything would be shredded into small pieces. Afterward, the slurry that comes out can be disposed of.

RV macerator pump benefits

  • Speed Up Waste Disposal: Dumping raw wastes may take a long time but if you turn the wastes into a slurry using a macerator pump, you should be able to empty the waste tanks in a matter of moments.
  • Permit The Use Of Standard Hoses: Originally, to reduce clogging, RVing enthusiasts need to use bulky sewer hoses to drain wastes in the waste tanks. If you add a macerator pump to your RV, you could use standard water hoses.
  • Offer More Versatile Route Planning: With a quality macerator pump on your rig, you don’t have to worry about the availability of dumping stations as you plan your travels. Thus, you would have more route options to choose from.

Types of RV macerator pump

Macerator pumps for recreational vehicles utilize a lot of designs, materials, technologies… but all models nowadays could be put into two types: permanent and portable.

Permanent Macerator Pumps

Meant to be connected to recreational vehicles for good, permanent macerator pumps tend to be favored by serious RVing enthusiasts. Though they seem costly and require some effort to set up, models in the type would process waste till the day they fail once installed. Besides that, thanks to the enduring construction, permanent macerator pumps hold together well over time.

Portable Macerator Pumps

As the name suggests, portable macerator pumps could be readily put up and taken down depending on the current situation. Unsurprisingly, models of the type get plenty of compliments from RVers that care about adaptability. Moreover, compared to permanent macerator pumps, portable ones prove to be more compact too so they let people save space.

Reviews On Best RV Macerator Pumps

You seek a robust macerator pump for your own RV? If that is indeed the case, you have to give the following models a look.

1. Flojet 18555000A – Best Of The Best

Why This Is The Best:

Engineered to connect to the waste outlets of recreational vehicles and discharge with standard garden hoses, Flojet 18555000A removes the need to bring sewer hoses. In addition to that, 18555000A is a lightweight portable pump so its handling is marvelous compared to classic macerator pumps. Since the size of wastes processed by the pump from Flojet seldom exceeds ⅛ inches, the odds of blockage tend to be rather low as well. Thus, Flojet 18555000A is the best RV macerator pump for those that wish to dump wastes in a convenient manner.

Possessing a rugged build, the Flojet RV waste pump could handle a wide range of shocks and vibrations in use. Because of that, if you decide to grab 18555000A, it would be years before you have to find a replacement. Upon purchase, Flojet 18555000A comes with a remote on/off switch that lets you regulate its operation without having to get close to the wastes. Thanks to the dry run protection, the Flojet pump remains undamaged even if you forget to turn it off after the tanks have been emptied.

In terms of maintenance, 18555000A requires simple care so keeping it in working order should be a piece of cake. As the macerator pump made by Flojet happens to be a self-priming model, it works smoothly from various positions.

I just finished using my new Flojet Pump to drain my RV tanks at my house for the first time. Overall, I thought it worked very well and I’m happy with my purchase. It is definitely convenient to be able to empty the tanks at the house, since the nearest dump station is pretty far and costs $10 every time.

I’ll pass on a few things I learned just in case it helps anyone else. First, as far as the wiring goes, I thought the hookup was fairly easy. Just make sure you have some sort of crimping tool on hand so you can make the proper connections. Also, several people have complained about the length of the power cord, but I found jumper cables to be a pretty simple solution. Since my house and chassis batteries are on the same side as my water bay, I was able to run a regular jumper cable from those batteries and clamp it onto the end of the pump’s power cord, and it worked perfectly.

I used a 75 foot 3/4″ hose to drain, and it seemed to work smoothly, even going up a slight incline. I did make one mistake that I’ll pass on. Be sure your tank valves are open when you turn on the hose going into the rinse valve. I failed to do this, and the water pressure immediately caused my sewer elbow adapter to pop apart and water spilled all over the street. Luckily, I had already drained the tanks and was in the rinsing phase, so it was clean water that spilled. I suppose that could have turned out quite nasty, so learn from my mistake!

The macerator blade seemed to handle everything well with no issues. It obviously takes longer to drain tanks than the traditional 3″ hose, but the convenience of doing it at home, and not having to mess with smelly sewer hoses makes this product well worthwhile, in my opinion.

Far exceeded my expectations!

I’ve used this pump combo for about three weeks now. It actually churns quick enough that I have to turn it off and on a couple times while the fifth wheel black and gray tanks finish draining. I did have to rig a 3″ NPT fitting to it as well as plastic weld a clear 45* bend to the fitting to attach the drain hoses to. It also didn’t come with threaded fittings for the out line, but that was my oversight. Custom made jumper cables with 12 gauge cable to spade connectors between the truck battery and pump kick it on and off.

With that being said a full 40~ gallon tank is empty in 1-2 minutes not counting flushing. I use it on both gray tanks as well after black into a 300 gallon drum in the bed of my truck with a gates valve, fire hose attachment and hose. Once 3/4 full I take it to a nearby gas station and dump for free.

After every use I pour 5w-30 engine oil through it, about a cup worth to keep water from sitting in it.

 Excellent for a dirty job!

Bought this to build a black waste macerator and pump system for our motorhome. Grinds up and pumps out everything I’ve thrown at it so far after about a year in service. It’ll slow a bit when it hits a big wad of toilet paper, but it just keeps ticking along. Some of the other pumps have a maximum duty cycle which means you will have to stop and let it rest occasionally. This pump just keeps going!

RV Macerator Pump Buying Guide

People have a variety of needs so there is no such thing as the best RV macerator pump for everyone. Nonetheless, RVing enthusiasts usually agree that it’s important to consider a couple of criteria before committing to a purchase.

Durability

Once it comes to waste disposal, the last thing you want to experience is to see your macerator pump break down all of a sudden. Because of that, it’s strongly recommended that you pay special attention to durability while assessing models on the market. Aside from making direct evaluations, you should also take a look at reviews written by fellow RVers for good measure. That is going to let you identify flimsy pumps and remove them from your shortlist.

Accessories

To empty the waste tanks on recreational vehicles, a macerator pump alone is simply inadequate. If RVers wish to put macerator pumps to use, they have to pair them with a couple of accessories: hoses, elbows, valves and so on. Thus, if you opt to grab a certain pump, remember to check out the kind of accessories that it requires. Needless to say, it’s wise to choose a model that happens to use accessories you already have on your RV to cut down expenses.

Ease Of Installation

You need to take care of many things as an RVer so you don’t really have all day to set up a complex pump. As a result, to avoid headaches and save time, it’s suggested that you give ease of installation some thoughts. Normally, you could get a general idea about the setup process of a model by reading through the installation instructions in its owner’s manual. Of course, if the steps seem too complex, you always have the option of hiring professionals to handle the installation but that would cost you.

Maintenance

Just like everything else, macerator pumps for recreational vehicles must be maintained periodically so as to stay in working order. That is why you have to think about the maintenance requirements as you look for the best RV macerator pump. The average models only need to be cleaned from time to time but to be on the safe side, you should adhere to the owner’s manual instead of improvising. In the case that you notice strange issues, it’s essential that you contact the manufacturer at the earliest opportunity.

Price

RV macerator pumps nowadays come at a wide range of price points so suitable models exist for all shopping budgets. That being said, it’s important that you adhere to the rule of thumb: “You get what you pay for”. While you don’t have to pick up expensive premium-grade pumps unless you have particular needs, you should steer clear of dirt cheap ones. Models with unbelievably low price tags tend to incorporate sub-par materials to keep the manufacturing cost down so they seldom last long in use.

Top RV Macerator Pump Brands

It’s unnecessary to limit your choices to several brands as the label on a pump rarely decides its values. Still, if you prefer to buy from reputable manufacturers then keep these names in mind.

Flojet

Founded in 1975, Flojet is known as one of the leading manufacturers of special application pumps. Possessing the ability to build quality products and responsive technical support, Flojet is held in high esteem by RVing enthusiasts.

Shurflo

By constantly improving its products with the latest technologies, Shurflo gets a shower of praise from RVers around the globe. With an assortment of models, Shurflo has solid macerator pumps for virtually every recreational vehicle

Seaflo

While Seaflo is a new brand, its products continuously receive positive remarks from various RVers, veterans as well as movies. So if you need a practical RV macerator pump built to the modern standards, Seaflo may have what you need.
